build tree itself - Instructions

build tree itself

Just before Christmas the house is decorated, designed the windows for Christmas and the Christmas decorations spread on tables and dressers. But all the Christmas decoration must also be accommodated and if possible be stored in a space-saving, the rest of the year.

With our assembly instructions, you can build a Christmas tree itself, which not only looks unique, but can be also stowed away. Flat he needs just a height of 18 mm, but placed it shows itself in its full and round shape.

Gladly the blueprint can be used to build different sized Christmas trees. If desired, can be even a "real" produce large Christmas tree, which can then be decorated colorfully and even stocked with candles. To do this, simply use different length battens instead delivered sägter wooden slats.

Tools and work material

Required tools

  • Anreißmittel (Bleistifft and steel rule)
  • Mini circular saw, table saw or circular saw
  • Table or cordless drill
  • Orbital sander (or other grinding tool)
  • optional router or router table
  • Forstner bit diameter 16 mm

Our predetermined amount refers to a Leimholzbrett as it is available in any hardware store, but can also be adapted to your own wishes. a board measuring 300 x 600 x is used in our construction manual 18mm.

Used Materials

  • Glued beech or similarly stable timber 300 x 600 x 18 mm
  • (Adjust holes) threaded rod M8 or M6
  • matching nut and washer

Step 1 - scribed as specified, existing wood or own wishes

Please use a more solid wood, such as beech or oak. The relatively soft pine / spruce glued tends quickly to spalling and is not suitable. With some feeling or a thicker material thickness, but it can also be used. It is important in this case, the course of the grain. Since spruce laminated wood is easily broken along the grain, it should be transverse to the height of the Christmas tree. In the example shown Beech was used and the grain direction plays a subordinate role.

Insert in the first step the board upright in front of and mark the center, which is indicated by a vertical pencil line. The bar must be clearly visible, as it will be needed later for drilling of the sawn strips. Mark is next to the desired height of the tree on the center line. A good result can be achieved with a width-height ratio of 3: 4th With a 30 Leimholzbrett they thus obtain a height of 40 cm.

With the joining of the label and the lower corners, there is already the basic shape of a Christmas tree self-built. Because of the subsequent saw cuts, but is still losing altitude.

Step 2 - blank with mini plunge-cut saw, circular saw or circular saw

After the scribe of the tree, it can be cut out as a triangle with the table saw, circular saw or a jigsaw. If the sawing result not exact, which plays a subordinate role. It makes sense, however, is to grind the raw edges already. Are only the strips cut, the resulting small areas are difficult smoothed.

A Christmas tree later "volume" to give the sawed triangle must be cut into several strips. Which saw can be noted is up to you. However, the narrower the blade, the less loss occurs in the later overall height. It is therefore advantageous a mini circular saw with a thin blade. Equally useful is to use a side stop, which guarantees an always constant cutting width. The spacing of the cuts should correspond (18 mm) in about the selected material thickness.

Then the sawn strips can be ground. However, making sure that the middle scribe is still visible.

Tip: Start cutting with the Long side. Deviations creep in and the cuts are wrong after several strips, which can hardly be seen at the top later.

Step 3 - Drilling of items

The drilling of the component parts should preferably be carried out on a bench drill or a drill press stand, since any deviation determines the later image.

Drilling with stop on the drill pressDrilling with stop on the drill press

Set up for this purpose a stop one that guarantees a central bore of the strips. The lateral alignment is based on the remaining center marker. When drilling the lateral oblique cut surfaces must always point downwards. This is very important in order both to achieve a consistent hole pattern in case the attack was not exactly aligned on the other hand to be able to drill the top in this position. The center scribe should this show to you and is used for alignment. Crack initiation and drills should be in alignment. Drill so - up to the top - all delivered sawed bars with an 8 mm drill. A hole of 8.1 or 8.2 mm then facilitated the passage of the threaded rod, bigger but the game should not be.

After drilling, all parts can be ground. The center scribe is no longer needed.

Step 4 - the tip requires a thread

To give the Christmas tree itself built later maintenance, all parts must be threaded onto a threaded rod that is attached at the top. They can be mounted in different ways and safely falls one or the other one's own or preferred variant.

cut threads in timbercut threads in timber

Probably the simplest form would be to make the borehole slightly larger in the tip and to secure the threaded rod by means of glue. Somewhat more complicated is to use a so-called Rampa sleeve or wrapping sleeve. For this purpose a hole of about 10 mm is drilled and a threaded sleeve screwed or wrapped, which provides the required M8 available. Here, you should pre-drill generously to prevent a burst of very small tip.

As a third variant, it is also possible to cut threads into the wood. The harder the wood used, the better this version is ideally. To do this, drill the required core hole of 6.8 mm and then turn in line a the tap. On cutting oil can be dispensed with in this case, of course. Even if the thread certainly not as viable as is metal, it is, however, quite sufficient for this application. to the thread as deep as possible to be cut without the hole at the top is visible is advantageous.

Step 5 - shapes of the base plate

The design of the base can be made according to their own ideas. Whether round or square or cube depends on your taste and the available tools. can be used for this the rest of the existing Leimholzes. Also a darker type of wood can be very good.

We decided with our model for a slightly thicker and round disk with a diameter of about 150 mm, which fits very well visually to the tree. The cut can be made with a jigsaw or if available with a router and a Router compass. If a router is available, a Contour cutting completes the simple appearance of the disc slightly.

What is important is a central bore of 8 mm, with a Forstner bit to a diameter of about 16 mm and a depth of at least 10 mm is reduced additionally. The reduction is used to receive a washer and a nut with a M8 thread. The diameter of 16 mm refers to a commercially available 13 mm socket wrench, with which the nut can be tightened. A lot of power but this is not required, so that the mother can also be easily held with fingers.

Step 6 - Adjusting the threaded rod

In the last step of the Christmas tree can be assembled and the threaded rod must be adjusted accordingly.

The supernatant threaded rod must be shortenedThe supernatant threaded rod must be shortened

Do this by turning the threaded rod as the first in the thread of the tree top and pull it slightly. Some glue can support a long-lasting hold. Then all tree parts are of size threaded onto the threaded rod. For later ease of twisting a washer can be placed between any parts. This gives a slightly sleeker look of the tree and all parts are easy to turn even with a not so precise cutting. Following the placement of the stand and the fixing by means of threaded nut is. Was the hole cut deeply enough, even a self-locking nut can be used. Tighten the nut only so tight that all parts of the tree still turn easily.

In order for the required length of the threaded rod is fixed, can be marked and cut to size. To do this, use a hacksaw, an angle grinder or similar instrument. However, remove the threaded rod from the wood or take the lower wooden strips off so as not to damage them.

The threaded rod carefully ShortenThe threaded rod carefully ShortenWith a deep-cutting is not overWith a deep-cutting is not over

In order to easily remove the burr generated during cutting, a nut can be rotated on the threaded rod before, which pushes after separation when turning the burr to the outside. A self-locking nut should be but this is not used. The heat and the ridge would damage the plastic ring. Finally, the tree can be screwed down and put up again. How to arrange the strips is up to you - unevenly for a natural look or a staircase for a modern look.

We wish a Merry Christmas.
