Material requirements and Required Tools

Material requirements:

Designation number Dimensions (length)
Footboard (23 x 74 mm) 1 400 mm
Sidebar (17 x 38 mm) 2 327 mm
Cross bar (17 x 38 mm) 2 366 mm
Webs (17 x 38 mm) 2 293 mm
Rear wall (3 mm) 1 400 x 350 mm
Adhesive film (optional) 400 x 350 mm
Stains, stain, color (optional) Rustic effect stain
wood glue

Starting dimension for our self-built window frame was an existing board made of laminated wood, which met our wishes about. Therefore, this laminated wood board was used as a reference point for the taking of measurements. However, the application does not find it in the example, as a simple back wall is thinner and cheaper.

Even though we have given all dimensions for cutting, you can build your own window itself according to our instructions. may use for sizing a floor (chipboard) from an old drawer or a suitable piece of residual material from the hardware store. In step "take measurements and cutting"t we show you how to determine the extent of the cut. They are therefore not bound by our specifications.

Needed tools:

  • Miter Saw (Saw alternative possible)
  • Grinding tool (orbital sander, random orbit sanders, grinders ..... Delta)
  • Brush for paint, varnish or stain
  • clamps

Step 1: take measurements and cutting

1. Determine the length footboard1. Determine the length footboard2. Measure sidebar2. Measure sidebar3. Measure the cross bar3. Measure the cross bar4. Measure webs4. Measure webs

  1. Place the wider footrest under your expected back wall, transfer the length and cut the footboard to be recorded or measured dimension. Alternative: Width of the rear wall
  2. Now position the foot panel on the rear panel and measure the remaining rear wall. Thus the length of the side last results. Alternative: Height of the rear wall - board thickness of the footboard.
  3. Insert the sidebars into place and measure the space for the cross bars. Alternative: Width of the rear wall - 2x strength of the sidebar
  4. In order to determine the extent of the webs, the foot rest and the two transverse strips are superposed on the rear wall, and determines the residual amount. This dimension divided Trough two gives the length of the webs. Alternative: (Back wall height - from the footboard thickness - 2x strength of the transverse strips) / 2

Step 2: grinding of all strips

Are all the strips and the footboard sawn and sees the sample configuration as desired, which strips can be ground.

Since selling wood profile 100% rarely rectangular, it is best to clamp the strips to each other with clamps. So all be exactly upright and the narrow side of the profile should not be a right angle, it is automatically straightened during grinding. The later facilitates gluing.

Now grind both sides as evenly as possible. To do this, the sander with the whole area flat on and avoid to edit individual locations targeted. The more evenly you wear the entire area, the better the strips are later and stand straight.

Step 3: Mark the gluing surface

Takes place later, a color scheme, the window frame must be assembled without rear wall. The only happens with glue and without screws, as they could easily move the strips. Vorm glue it is advisable to mark the subsequent contact surfaces to facilitate alignment.

To mark the contact surfaces of the window frame is constructed and accurately aligned. Now mark lightly with a pencil where glue is needed. With a stop angle, the markings may be clearly marked out as lines then.

Tip: Use the glue "Classik wood glue and no glue Express. Although Classik wood glue takes longer to dry, is for it but the possibility to align the surfaces accurately. But even with Classik glue you should hurry, because the adhesive surfaces attract fast.

Step 4: gluing of the strips to the window frame

Start the glue with the innerern Cross and the upper web. Set this to the upper cross bar and then lower it. In the next step, the sidebars are recognized and the lower web glued. Lastly, the foot board finds its place.

Set up everything again exactly and then clamp the window frame with clamps.

After drying inaccurate shocks can be ground again and the window frames are already being used. Sample images for use without further processing are at the end of the page.

Step 5: Using a rear wall with image

Who the window frame-built a "real" wants to give optics, may use a back wall with a picture. For this purpose, pictures, motif wallpaper or even computer printouts are. We looked for a motive for this from the Internet and distributed this to images to use an A4 color printer.

Although the image used under license "CC0 Public Domain" and requires no attribution, but we find it fair to send the honor to the author that he has earned the great work: Author 2221709 on pixabay.com

Pasting of the rear wall is performed with spray glue, which is applied evenly to the surface. The individual images can be glued on. Failing that exactly this is not so bad. Small gaps are later covered with bars.

Step 6: A white make rear wall with adhesive film and pickling the frame

Who wants a neutral background, can also make the rear wall of this. We have simply turned and made with adhesive film for a white background. Thus, the back wall can use as required, and adapt to their own needs.

The cutting of the adhesive film can be made quite generous, as the supernatant can be easily cut with a utility knife. Important when placing the film, however, the rear wall of every small crumb is to free. This would otherwise not allow the adhesive film lie flat, which can clearly be seen later.

For better contrast, the window frame was then stained slightly darker, so it will look more natural. You might want to hold the frame in the typical white and use a light blue (sky blue) adhesive film.
